LED Panel Lights Explained: Types, Applications, and Installation Options

Quick Answer: LED panel lights are thin, flat ceiling fixtures that spread light evenly across a room instead of shining from one bright spot. They come in two main forms — recessed/POP panels that sit flush inside a false ceiling, and ceiling/surface panels that mount directly onto any flat surface. A typical panel uses 50-70% less power than an old tube light, runs for years without flickering, and takes about 15-20 minutes to install per fixture once the wiring is ready.

I get asked some version of the same question almost every week, usually over a phone call that starts with "I'm redoing my ceiling, which light should I buy?" And honestly, there's no one-line answer, because it depends on your ceiling type, the room, and what mood you're going for. So I'm going to walk through this the way I'd explain it to a customer standing in front of me at our office in Gandhinagar.

So, What Is a Panel Light, Really?

Picture an old tube light or a bulb — the light comes from one point and spreads outward, which is why you get bright spots under it and dimmer patches away from it. A panel light works differently. Behind that flat, milky-white sheet on top sits a light-guide plate that takes the LED source (either along the edges or from a COB chip in the middle) and diffuses it across the whole surface. The result is flat, even, glare-free light.

That difference sounds small until you're sitting under it for eight hours a day in an office, or trying to read at a kitchen counter without a shadow falling across the cutting board. It's also why panel lights barely stick out from the ceiling — most sit under 15mm thick — which makes them the natural fit wherever someone wants clean LED panel lights for ceiling work without a bulky fixture hanging down.

The Two Main Types (And Why People Mix Them Up)

Buyers walk into this thinking it's just "panel light" as one product. It isn't. There are two distinct builds, and picking the wrong one for your ceiling is probably the most common mistake I see.

Recessed / POP Panel Lights

These go inside the ceiling. If you've got a false ceiling made from Plaster of Paris (POP) or gypsum board, the electrician cuts a circular or square opening during construction, and the fixture drops into that cutout so it sits flush, almost invisible except for the glow. Our Recessed/POP Panel Light range is built specifically for this — hallways, kitchens, closets, living rooms, wherever the ceiling has already been planned with cutouts in mind.

If your false ceiling work is happening now, this is the one to plan for before the POP gets finished, not after.

Ceiling / Surface Panel Lights

No cutting required here. These come in their own housing and mount straight onto a plain ceiling with screws or a clip-on base plate. Rented flats, older buildings, or any space where you don't want to touch the existing structure — this is where surface panels earn their keep. Our Ceiling/Surface Panel Light collection includes models with adjustable colour temperature and dimmable output, so the same fixture can go from a bright, task-lit setting to a softer evening tone.

COB Lights, the Overlooked Third Option

Not strictly a panel light, but close enough that it deserves a mention. COB (Chip-on-Board) fixtures concentrate light into a tighter beam, which makes them useful for accent lighting — highlighting a wall niche, a false ceiling border, or artwork — rather than flooding an entire room. Two we sell regularly are the 9 Watt Round LED COB Light for POP/Recessed Lighting and the 18 Watt Round LED Deep COB Light, both sold in warm white, cool white, and natural white. Browse the full range under COB Lights if you're mixing accent lighting with your main panels.

That distinction — recessed versus surface, plus COB for accents — is really the foundation of good LED panel lighting planning. Once that's settled, wattage and colour temperature are the easy part.

Picking LED Panel Lights for Homes

Home lighting is less about lumens and more about how the room feels once the lights are on. I've had customers install 6500K cool white panels in a bedroom because "brighter is better," and then call back a week later asking why the room feels like a hospital ward. So here's the rough breakdown we actually recommend:

Living rooms and bedrooms do best under warm white, somewhere around 2700K to 3000K — it reads as relaxed rather than clinical. Kitchens and bathrooms need the opposite: cool or natural white in the 4000K to 5000K range, because these are task spaces where you're chopping vegetables or checking your reflection, and dim, warm light just doesn't cut it. Study corners and home offices sit comfortably in the middle with natural white, which is easier on the eyes over long working hours than either extreme.

On wattage, most Indian households with false ceilings go for 12W to 24W recessed panels per room, adjusted for room size and how many fixtures are spread across the ceiling. If your ceiling's untouched and you're not keen on construction work, the surface-mount range solves that without any cutting or plastering.

LED Panel Lights for Commercial Spaces

Commercial lighting plays by a different set of rules altogether, and frankly, most homeowners never have to think about the things business owners deal with daily — lights running 10 to 12 hours a day, sometimes longer in retail or manufacturing setups.

A few things that matter more in commercial buildouts than in homes:

Uniform coverage across the ceiling grid beats raw brightness almost every time — a showroom floor with patchy lighting looks unfinished no matter how good the display counters are. Fewer, higher-wattage fixtures spaced evenly usually outperform a ceiling crowded with dozens of low-wattage points, both visually and on the electricity bill. And warranty coverage matters a lot more here, since a fixture running 12 hours daily wears differently than one lit for a few hours each evening at home — which is exactly why most of our range ships with a 2-year warranty rather than the bare minimum.

For offices, retail counters, and showrooms, LED panel lights for commercial spaces generally land between 18W and 40W depending on ceiling height and floor area. You can browse everything under all product categories, or check current stock and pricing across all products if you're planning a full fit-out.

Four Things to Check Before You Buy

Skip the trial-and-error and run through this list instead:

First, match the fixture to your ceiling — false ceiling means recessed, plain ceiling means surface-mount, and there's no real workaround for getting this wrong. Second, size the wattage to the room; roughly one watt per square foot works as a starting estimate for general lighting, with a bit more for task-heavy zones like kitchens. Third, pick colour temperature based on what the room is actually used for, not just personal preference in isolation. And fourth — this one gets skipped constantly — confirm BIS certification. It isn't a nice-to-have in India; it's the baseline safety and quality standard, and every fixture we manufacture carries it.

What Installation Actually Looks Like

This is the part people worry about most, and it's usually simpler than they expect. Here's how LED panel light installation plays out for each type.

For recessed or POP panels, the ceiling opening gets marked and cut during the false ceiling construction itself — this needs to happen before the POP work is finished, not as an afterthought. The wiring gets pulled through and connected to the driver that ships with the fixture. Then the panel pushes into the cutout, usually held by spring clips that grip against the ceiling board from behind. Switch on, test, done.

For ceiling or surface panels, it's even more direct: mark the mounting holes using the fixture's own base plate as a template, drill and screw the plate into position, wire it to the driver, then clip the panel onto the base.

Either way, budget around 15 to 20 minutes per fixture if the person doing it has basic electrical know-how. For multi-room jobs or commercial fit-outs, get a licensed electrician involved, mainly to make sure the circuit load is distributed sensibly — LED drivers pull very little power individually, but a badly planned wiring job can still cause flickering or nuisance tripping down the line, especially in areas with frequent voltage fluctuation. And one habit worth building: test every fixture on the ground before it goes into the ceiling cutout. Costs you thirty seconds, saves you from reopening a finished POP ceiling because one unit turned out faulty.

Why the Manufacturer Behind the Product Actually Matters

Here's something most buying guides gloss over entirely — two LED panels can look identical sitting side by side on a shop shelf and still perform completely differently a year later. Cheaper, unbranded panels often run on lower-grade drivers that degrade faster, struggle with voltage swings (a genuine issue in a lot of Indian neighbourhoods, especially during monsoon season), and lose brightness well before their rated lifespan is up.

We've been manufacturing LED lighting and electrical control panels since 2015 out of our facility in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and in that time we've shipped to more than 5 lakh customers across homes, offices, and industrial sites. That volume gives you a pretty clear picture of what holds up over years of daily use and what doesn't. It's part of why we're known as an LED Lights Manufacturer in Gandhinagar rather than just another reseller — we design and produce the fixtures ourselves under ISO-9001 certified processes, with BIS-approved components across the range.

If you're comparing us against other names claiming to be among the best LED light manufacturers in India, there are a few honest questions worth asking any brand: Is it actually BIS certified? What's the warranty period, and does it cover the driver as well as the LEDs? Is the company manufacturing domestically or just rebranding imported stock? We hold up on all three — which is also why most of our catalogue carries a 2-year warranty, free shipping on prepaid orders, and a no-questions-asked 7-day return window.

If you're an electrician, contractor, or retailer looking to stock our range for client projects, we work with business partners across India on bulk pricing and supply.

Wrapping This Up

LED panel lights aren't complicated once the two core types make sense to you — recessed for false ceilings, surface-mount for plain ones — and once you've matched colour temperature to what the room is actually used for. Get that right, and the installation itself is genuinely one of the more forgiving parts of any renovation.

Still not sure which panel fits your ceiling or room size? Our customer support team will talk through the dimensions and ceiling type with you directly — a five-minute conversation that's usually cheaper than a wrong order and a return trip to the hardware store.
